AI literacy
Making AI understandable to citizens, families, workers and decision-makers, in plain language and in Portuguese.
About AMIA
AMIA is a Mozambican non-profit association created to promote the responsible, inclusive and strategic development of Artificial Intelligence in Mozambique.
The place where Mozambique can understand, discuss, learn, adopt and shape Artificial Intelligence.

Who we are
In brief
AMIA is a Mozambican non-profit association created to promote the responsible, inclusive and strategic development of Artificial Intelligence in Mozambique.
It acts as a platform for knowledge, education, innovation, ethics, research, digital transformation and public dialogue — a bridge between society, technology, business, academia, culture and the public interest.
It was born of a simple observation: Artificial Intelligence is already transforming the economy, work, education and public life, and Mozambique cannot stand on the sidelines of that transformation — neither as a passive consumer nor as a spectator. The country needs to understand the technology, build skills, produce its own data and knowledge, and decide with autonomy.
AMIA is the place where Mozambique can understand, discuss, learn, adopt and shape AI. It brings together people and institutions who want to take part in that process seriously: researchers, teachers, business leaders, technicians, lawyers, journalists, students and public decision-makers.
It is neither a regulator nor a State body. It is a civil-society association that contributes, promotes, studies, connects, mobilises, informs, trains and proposes — and that measures its worth by what it helps the country do better.
AMIA contributes, promotes, studies, connects, mobilises, informs, trains and proposes.
Commitment
To promote the responsible, inclusive and strategic development of Artificial Intelligence in Mozambique, contributing to literacy, capacity building, research, innovation, ethical reflection and closer ties between the different actors interested in the country's technological future.
Horizon
To help Mozambique be better prepared to understand, adopt and develop Artificial Intelligence solutions suited to its reality, valuing knowledge, national skills, Mozambican languages, innovation, education and the responsible participation of society in this new technological era.

How it acts
Eight verbs define how AMIA acts. None of them is to regulate, coordinate or control.
Brings technical knowledge and a national perspective to the processes in which Artificial Intelligence is discussed, at the invitation of the competent institutions.
Gives visibility to literacy, research and good practice in the responsible use of AI in Mozambique.
Produces briefs, technical notes and analyses on the impact of AI in the country, with evidence, sources and method.
Brings Government, academia, business, banking, the media, international cooperation and civil society together around a common agenda.
Calls on national expertise and communities for concrete initiatives, in every province.
Runs the Observatory and Radar AMIA: useful, verified information in Portuguese on AI in Mozambique, in Africa and worldwide.
Organises training courses, workshops and capacity-building programmes for citizens, professionals, teachers and institutions.
Presents recommendations and technical contributions to the authorities and decision-makers, without replacing the role the law assigns to them.
Position
AMIA is not a regulator, does not coordinate the Government and does not control national Artificial Intelligence policy. Those powers belong to State institutions. AMIA works with them — by invitation, in public consultation or on its own initiative — with technical, independent and well-founded contributions.

Editorial theme
What Artificial Intelligence means for the country — opportunities, risks and responsibilities.
Why AI is a national issue
AI is not a matter for specialists alone: it decides what citizens read, how companies compete, how public services respond and which languages technology speaks. Mozambique has the opportunity to leapfrog stages — if there are skills, data and vision.
An opportunity to leapfrog stages of development — if there are skills, data and vision.
Education, agriculture, health, finance, public administration, culture and business.
Disinformation, exclusion, technological dependence and misuse of data.
Without quality national data, AI does not reflect the Mozambican reality.
Most Mozambicans communicate in languages that AI does not yet speak.
Understanding the technology is a precondition for using it and for questioning it.
